Ceremony to open new senior housing

By Felicia Thomas-Lynn
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, May 10, 2007

State and local leaders will be on hand Friday for the grand opening of a new senior housing development in Milwaukee's Metcalfe Park neighborhood.

The Wesley L. Scott Senior Living Community, which was formerly the Milwaukee Urban League's historic headquarters, was converted into 80 units, the majority for low- to moderate-income seniors.

The $10 million development, at 2800 W. Wright St., is a partnership between the Urban League and Gorman & Co., using $8.3 million in low-income housing tax credits from the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority.

During the 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. grand opening, neighborhood residents and others will have an opportunity to tour the facility, which still has 50 available units. Also included in the program will be an unveiling of a bust created in the likeness of the late Wesley Scott, who died two years ago. Scott, a leader in the Milwaukee civil rights movement, served as executive director of the Milwaukee Urban League from 1959 to 1981.
