Milwaukee, March 19, 2007
Gorman & Company, a Madison-based leader in real estate development, was awarded the State Farm Insurance and Financial Services’ “Building Blocks Award” in the large project category for its Dr. Wesley L. Scott Senior Living Community development. The award was presented in Milwaukee on March 15, 2007, at the Eighth Annual Milwaukee Awards for Neighborhood Development Innovation (MANDI) ceremony. The MANDI awards, introduced by Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) in 1999, honors the successes of non-profit organizations and companies in the community development industry that strive to revitalize Milwaukee neighborhoods.
The Dr. Wesley L. Scott Senior Living Community received the MANDI for its promotion of healthy social and cultural life within its community and its acute consciousness of the surrounding locale. Additionally, the development was selected for unique physical and social characteristics, and its physical aesthetics. Dr. Wesley L. Scott Senior Living Community has helped “build blocks” to spur further development and serve as a model for other neighborhoods.
“Our core mission is to revitalize communities through innovative housing partnerships,” says Tom Capp, chief operating officer for Gorman & Company. “Milwaukee presents unique challenges for developers striving to offer affordable housing solutions for the aging population that also promote social interaction and ensure safety. Receiving the ‘Building Blocks’ award is evidence that Dr. Wesley Scott Senior Living Community succeeded in this mission.”
The Dr. Wesley L. Scott Senior Living Community, in Milwaukee’s Metcalfe Park Neighborhood, couples historic renovation with new construction to offer an amenity-rich community that provides 80 senior apartments, 74 of which target households below 60 percent of area median income. The partnership between Gorman & Company and the Milwaukee Urban League was central to converting this historic college and late home of the Milwaukee Urban League into senior apartment homes in a challenged neighborhood.
